Polar protection

China and polar conservation

China is emerging as a key player in the polar regions, which are also increasingly important to the global environment. To promote a better understanding of China’s strategy and a more responsible role for China in the governance of the polar regions, WildBound and other organizations are building a cross-sector network that actively works on policy, research, and public outreach.

China Polar Conservation Network

WildBound is a cofounder of the China Polar Conservation Network, alongside Greenovation Hub, World Wildlife Fund, Homeward Bound, Greenpeace, and SEE Foundation. The Network aims to exchange research, advise China’s polar policy, collectively promote the conservation of polar regions, and to organize public educational events.

Our work

  • Biennial polar conservation conference in Beijing, China, alongside a youth art exhibition and public debate

  • Public outreach and education programs on polar protection with a focus on youth engagement

  • An innovative polar education curriculum used for five expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica for youth and for workshops conducted in over 10 schools in China, influencing hundreds of students

  • An environmental manual for Chinese tourists to Antarctica in collaboration with the China Tourism Association, ensuring all Chinese tourists to Antarctica become ambassadors for the poles
